One of the least expected field to catch the internet bandwagon is Online Tutoring. Though online training and selfhelp course material has been around for ages, they were geared towards the professionals and higher age who are in more control of themselves.

But tutoring for children and youngsters calls for different skills. The tutor should be able to engage and guide them so that they grasp the content in which they need additional help. After all that is the reason for engaging a tutor.

In internet tuition the tutor and the child sits in some place few hundred / thousand miles apart,  in front of the computer connected through broadband . The student and the teacher see and talk to each other through the web camera and the microphone fitted at each end. The greatest benefit of going online is the reach. You are not restricted by the geographical boundaries. This one of the best telecommuting jobs for individuals.Many popular online tutoring centers have a pool of tutors  based on subject, geographical location , expertise, availability etc and assign to children based on their requirements. It is a team effort and benefits both the tutors to refer children to each other and for the children to find relevant teachers.

Did you notice the ‘Referral’ feature of Google Adsense. That is the new money making baby from Google. This works like the existing content ads but with  more power to pick the ads or category of ads to be displayed on our site and lesser restriction in TOS. There are products in the market already such as Auction Ads that displays ads based on the product/keyword we choose. The referral concept is not entirely new to google. The Firefox with google toolbar is already one such product. Now it has been extended to many non google products.

How is it different from the Content Ad ?

1. With Referral  we can pick to display specific product or category of product whereas content ads are shown based on the content/keywords identified on the website and we have no control on the ads. How many times you have noticed unrelated ads in our site and google says the ads will be more targeted as our site matures. Atleast this saves face by not listing unrelated ads.
2. Google Referral Ads are based on Pay Per Action whereas the content ads are pay per click and pay per impression advertising ie the payment is based on valid clicks and impressions on the ads shown.

Can you identify the Referral from the Adsense Content ad?

Though it resembles the regular ads in size, structure, and content, the message  “Referral Ads by Google”  distinguishes it from the standard  “Ads by Google”.  For example the ad on the right panel is a google referral product.

Conclusion 

Referral ads seem to have a higher chance to earn more since we can blend it with our site content.As of now selected adsense publishers are invited to participate in this program and little information is available to see the success trend.

How many of us have had the courage to meddle and break open a new toy worth few hundred dollars with no guarantee to re-assemble into a working piece again.

While I wound’t dare into such an adventure, George Hotz not only did that but also succeeded to trade his re-organized toy for a few thousand dollars. It is been a week now since this teenage kid who spent his summer holidays in worthless persuit (in the opinion of others) made the headlines. 

George Hotz managed to break open the Apple’s  iphone which works exclusively with AT&T network and switch it to use other networks. While his buddies were occupied with the pleasures of the average teen age boys, our whiz kid was  soldering the pieces of the iphone and eventually hit the jackpot. The success was not gained overnight, it was a 500 hours of hard work. 

The Lesson

It is just not enough if we do something right (I don’t know the legal implications of this iphone experiment) but taking it to the market at the right time makes the difference between a money making successful accomplishment and just a successful accomplishment.  George tried listing through ebay but for reasons that did not materialize. But his blog and other internet sites helped to carry the news faster than the speed of light.

Now the iphone is traded for a Nissan 350Z and 3 more 8GB iphones + 2 consulting job offers. How much of your free time did you convert into cash and job?

It was this day on 17th Aug 1982 that this shiny round object called ‘Compact Disc’ was born in a Phillips Factory in Germany. The first disc was created for the music industry , specifically “The Visitors” by Abba.  And that started a revolution , not only in music , but also in the technology world particularly in storage area. 

The CD soon replaced the tape as the storage medium. Floppy disc which was one of the primary mode of storage for PC was made extint. May be a couple of them can be found in the museums just like the punch cards of yester years. 

With CD taking the main stage, the CD writer started appearing, first the external writer and now almost every laptop comes with a internal writer. While other digital devices such as portable hard-disk, memory sticks have begun to take over our shiny thingy, the spectrum colors coming out of the silvery CD is always a pleasure to look at.

There is also a different use for the compact disc. If you have a pile of unwanted CD take a look at what all you can do with them:

1. A no fuss playing toy for your children(only for 5 years and above)

2. Use it as a decorative piece - Just hang or stick cd in various patterns around the house and create your art masterpiece

3. Dress up  and assemble them - To make anything from a penstand to storage boxes or even chandelier. One of the art exhibition actually had this.

You , think  you have created a reasonable good art or a usable article ? why not sell it online at ebay ? I am sure the response will be a good surprise. If you have doubts , why not gift them to relatives and friends and see the response. You don’t even have to buy cd, there are loads of unsed ones in every house/ office and people will be pleased if you clear their garbage.
